Persephone and pomegranates

... Finally, unable to bear her hunger, Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds, that bound her to the Underworld forever. Her fate was sealed. Later, Persephone admitted that she had eaten of a pomegranate.

Interesting Fact

Persephone, a vegetation goddess of planting seeds and making nature grow, goddess of spring, queen of the underworld, sometimes known as Kore or the Maiden ("the maiden of the beautiful ankles"). While most sources indicate that she was not happy to be married to Hades (Pluto) and that she had to stay in the Underworld, others assert that the truth is that she ate the pomegranate seeds deliberately, as a way of breaking free from her mother, and that she was actually contented with the way things went on finally. So, her husband would be the liberator and not the raptor, the hero and not the villain. And Persephone would have been set free into the life she wanted to live. When taken from her mother's domains and square chores into the underground (psyche/unconscious/spirit) realm and palace, Kore's name changed to Persephone. Persephone rebirths as Queen of the Underworld (psychopomp) upon her arrival in her inner world, where she springs and blossoms as she walks her path.
