The Spirit of the Healer and Teacher
Interestingly, in Siberia, the name used
to designate women shaman is the same as the word “bear”. In Northern America,
in the Inuit tradition, the bear spirit animal is also connected to the
shamanic tradition and women.
For the Inuit people, the bear is a
strong power or totem animal. In some beliefs, it is said that if an Inuit
hunter accepts to be eaten by a bear, he may reincarnate as a shaman and carry
the spirit of this animal. The polar bear is considered as the “Wise Teacher”
as it shows how to survive in harsh conditions.
Bear Medicine (series of Native American Medicine Animals)
What is your Animal Spirit Guide?
The Bear is your spirit guide. This is a spirit guide
that represents strength, and power. This means that you are probably very
strong-willed and you intimidate people easily (whether you mean to or not). On
the other hand, the Bear also represents gentleness, motherly care/love, and
dreaming. You probably dream about what the future holds and where life will
take you. Although the Bear is typically represented as angry and fierce (which
they can be if the need arises), they are actually very gentle and caring
creatures who avoid conflict as much as possible. However, with the Bear as
your guide, you posses and display alot of aggresion. Don't let that get the
better of you. The Bear is your guardian because you need to start paying
closer attention to how you think, act, and interact with others, and he is
there to help you down that path. Congratulations, you have a strong, yet
gentle ally in the Bear, he won't let you down.

Bear Medicine
~ DreamLodge
The Bear is
the keeper of the dream time, and stores the teachings of dreams until the
dreamer wakes up to them. Many tribes have called this space of inner-knowing
the Dream Lodge, where the death of the illusion of physical reality overlays
the expansiveness of eternity. It is in the Dream Lodge that our ancestors sit
in Council and advise us regarding alternative pathways that lead to our goals.
If you like
bears, you should maybe look into some books on interpreting dreams; especially
if you're a heavy dreamer. If you need a lot of sleep, it may be Bear working.
This female receptive energy, for centuries has allowed visionaries, mystics,
and shamans to prophesy.
The
strength of Bear medicine is the power of introspection. Bear is not one to
make snap decisions, nor one to ramrod or force into any position. Bear takes
in all available information, takes it into his quiet place, studies that
information carefully, gives it careful thought for a while, and then reaches
his own informed decisions based on the facts at hand. Bear is the one who
says, "I have to think about this. I'll be in touch later." You can
rely on opinions coming from a Bear person as being well thought out and
thorough, and based on the facts given. To accomplish the goals and dreams that
we carry, the art of introspection is necessary.
Bear is a
fierce warrior, especially when protecting their young. They appear to be
lumbering and slow, but can have lightning speed when threatened. They love
fish when they can get it, but they also eat berries, honey, etc. Bear people
like home and shelter, and like to be warm and cozy.
With Bear
Medicine, the power of knowing has invited you to enter the silence and become
acquainted with the Dream Lodge, so that your goals may become concrete realities.
This is the strength of Bear.
Journey
with Bear to the quietness of your cave and hibernate in silence. Dream your
dreams and own them. Then in strength you will be ready to discover the honey
waiting in the Tree of Life.
Flames of the Bear Spirit
The Bear is a fierce protector, intuitive, the leader of the animals due
to his fearless medicine, and can often manisfest healing. The bear is a symbol of invincibility, offering a
secure refuge for those who enjoy the company of a totem bear spirit
guide.
Some anthropologists say that the Bear was one of the first animals to be
revered by humans. Traditional names for the bear include King of
the Forest and Grandfather, both of which show the
respect that the bear inspires in Traditional Shamanic cultures. And who would
not admire the noble bear, strong-willed and powerful, but also with great
heart and supernatural powers?
Bear has been a figure in the forefront of many Native cultures. Beliefs state
that the power of the Great Spirit lives through the bear, therefore making
them highly sought after guides due to their fearless medicine. This belief led
to a constellation to be named after it, Ursus Major, The Great Bear.Bear
is also associated with the Goddess Artemis.
If you have bear as power animal, you will most
probably be quieter during the winter months, which is similar to the bear
hibernating during the winter. But in the spring you must awaken to seek
whatever opportunities arise. Hibernating during the cold winter months,
means bears know instinctively when the time is right and where to go. The
Bear hibernates to reconnect with the earth to seek insights within, and
emerges with answers to spiritual dilemmas. Be fearless in standing up for
what you believe in. You are also encouraged to use your abilities as a natural
healer. Bear is linked to trees, considered to be natural antennas, joining the
heavens and the Earth.
*The Brown Bear, including the Grizzly bear has powerful life force, and a shaman with a grizzly
bear power animal takes on this characteristic, becoming almost invincible when
faced with physical or psychic attack. Beware the grizzly’s temper however, the
dark side of this power!
