Alder Moon - Goddesses, Witches and Faeries

The Alder is known as the fairy’s tree in Celtic lore, so it’s good for fairy magic. The faeries are said to dance under the trees when they are flowering. Alder wood is often called the wood of the witches or Battle Witch wood, and it was often used to make magical pipes, flutes and whistles for witches to use in sacred rituals or to call for help.

The Alder Moon is the first Full Moon after the Vernal (Spring) Equinox. It is also known as the Moon of Ostara, and it is also the Festival of Freyja. Ostara (Eostre) and Freyja (Freya, Goddess of the Witches) are very much alike, goddesses of spring, dawn and fertility, but Freya's form of fertility is more based on eroticism than reproduction. Girls born under the Moon of Ostara were very much venerated, and their menstrual blood was considered sacred and thus, solemnly recollected and used in magic fertility rites (fertility of the soil is one of the main focuses at Spring fertility rite of Beltane).

Noche menstrual, Emily Balivet

Animals associated with the Alder Moon are Foxes, Bears and the Falcon (Freyja).

People born under the Full Moon are idealists. They may spend a lot of time searching for belief systems that they can relate to. Relationships are important to them and they need to be fully conscious of the effects their words and actions have on others. It is hard for them to find the ideal relationship in this material world and they will often turn to religion or an ideal cause.

Alder's connection with Water and the Fire makes  it a psychically potent tree. The Alder tree is thought to be a gateway to the Otherworld, and wood from the Alder has apparently been used since ancient time to summon spirits from the Otherworld.
The Alder can represent...

*Defence and Protection
*Psychic Abilities
*Pioneering Spirit
*Strength
*Faerie Contact
*Spiritual Vision
*Blending of Masculine & Feminine energies
*Balance

Life on the fringes -  Fox lives in the border places around us: in the instants between evening and night, between nighttime and dawn, in the auric energies around our bodies, and in the spaces between waking consciousness and deep sleep. Fox totem is a guide to enter the Faerie Realm: if little Red Fox is your totem or guardian (The Alder Month – Guardian Animal: Fox), she is to lead you into the Home of the Faeries!

Fox Medicine

Shamans and traditional witches all over the world work with animal spirits. These spirits often represent a species as a whole: not a bear, but Bear. Through this connection, the shaman can call upon the strength of the bear, the swiftness of the horse, or the far sight of the eagle and so on. The animal protects the shaman, may instruct her, and becomes a vehicle for her soul in the Otherworld. Most of these spirits take the form of untamed, rather than domesticated animals. The bond of the shaman with her animal spirit is an entirely personal one, and is not shared by any group or family, though others in a group may have the same power animal. Witches call these spirit animals familiars, while in North America they are called power animals. The animal fetch or Dyr-Fylgja of Norse magicians was thought to accompany everyone through life. In Siberia an animal familiar is termed the Kyla or Chargi (animal soul). In South America, familiars are known as nagual animals. The word totem is different and implies a blood relationship or kinship between a person, a family or tribe and an animal. One of the most important functions of a familiar or animal ally is to help you journey to the Otherworld, the mysterious realm beyond normal waking consciousness, and the journey would be dangerous without the help of the spirit ally. For example, a shaman might be led by a fox into tunnels beneath the ground to experience the underworld, or a bird familiar might take him on a spirit flight through the treetops, showing him things he couldn't see from the ground, or beyond, into the heavens.
Our animal ally brings us messages or life lessons. Spirit of Fox - Spirit Guide - Fox Medicine: A trustful friend or guide in your journey to enter the Faerie Realm. Follow your fox and she will lead you to the Home of the Faeries! Fox shares with you the ability to watch the motivations and movements of others while remaining unobserved yourself. Foxes stay close to their dens, so your intention as a witch may be to turn to the home fires, and to take care of your home, family and garden. They were once thought to be holding counsels.

Fox - The Soul's Guardian Spirit

Fox has very acute senses of smell, vision and hearing. Smell symbolizes the power of discrimination. Vision is Fox "sight". So Fox medicine offers us the power of clear thinking and decision-making to keep us safe, healthy and prosperous. And hearing? Well, there are those whose Fox magic has gifted a sense of hearing beyond the ordinary.

Woe! I know fantastic Mr. Fox!

ProVegan - Las razones morales

Ginger in the sunshine

Warm spicy ginger root herbal tea bursts into life like a ray of sunshine first thing in the morning (the afternoon and the evening and at all other times!)... así darme cuenta de estas cosas, me hace recobrar esperanzas de cara al futuro: como dice una bruja amiga, invertir en energía PRO resulta mucho más revigorizante y prolífico que desgastarnos en energía EN CONTRA ;)

FOX IN MY KITCHEN

Ssshhh...! Come on in my kitchen. The one alone writing company is in good company tonight . I have a fox in my kitchen...

I have a fox in my kitchen. A really awesome-fun-to-be-around-fox. He’s a chef. And he cooks things. And while you never know what you are going to get, it’s always really really good.
Today was cranberry apple bread and homemade soup. Tomorrow will be something completely different.
But here’s the problem. He’s an artist in the kitchen. And like me, he’s hard to pin down. He is sneaky and mysterious and you never know what he will invent. Although, you never worry, because it’s always a.maz.ing.
The problem? I can’t get him to write a single thing down. Mostly because he is a busy father. But also, because he never makes the same thing twice. And really, that’s what it takes to write down your recipes. First time is the playing, and the second time is the recollecting.
So this is where I am putting on a little pressure. We all need a little, right?  I’ve been wanting to illustrate more food lately, and I’ve convinced him that I’d illustrate his recipes if he wrote a few down. How does that sound? Pretty wonderful. His mother will love us for it. He’s going to love me for it. And every one else who has been privileged to be at his table.
So, 2012…the year of some illustrated recipes? Maybe even prints? Hmmmm…..smells good ;) - sarajanestudios

I felt terribly identified with this fox's way to proceed (except for the massaman curry and the turkey soup recipes, of course, which I skipped): Tomorrow will be something completely different. But here's the problem. She's a kitchen witch. And she's hard to pin down. She is sneaky and mysterious and you never know what she will invent. Although, you never worry, because it's always vegalicious. The problem? I can’t get her to write a single thing down. Mostly because she is a busy witchlet. But also, because she never makes the same thing twice. And really, that’s what it takes to write down your recipes. First time is the playing, and the second time is the recollecting.

Imaginario Colectivo - Las Brujas

Welcome Freyja!

Some scholars have linked customs and imagery involving hares to Ēostre and the Norse goddess Freyja. Writing in 1972, John Andrew Boyle cites commentary contained within an etymology dictionary by A. Ernout and A. Meillet, where the authors write that "Little else [...] is known about [Ēostre], but it has been suggested that her lights, as goddess of the dawn, were carried by hares. And she certainly represented spring fecundity, and love and carnal pleasure that leads to fecundity." Boyle responds that nothing is known about Ēostre outside of Bede's single passage, that the authors had seemingly accepted the identification of Ēostre with the Norse goddess Freyja, yet that the hare is not associated with Freyja either. Boyle writes that "her carriage, we are told by Snorri, was drawn by a pair of cats — animals, it is true, which like hares were the familiars of witches, with whom Freyja seems to have much in common."
The Spring Festival of Ostara is also the Festival of Freyja (Norse): This fertility goddess abandons the Earth during the cold months of also re-emerges in the Spring to restore Nature's beauty. She wears a magnificent necklace called Brisingamen, which represents the fire of the sun. Goddess of Fire. Freyja (Freya) is also known as Mardöll (sea light), Gersimi (gem) and Menglödh ("happy with her necklace"). Freya, the Norse Goddess of Love, Beauty, War, Magic and Wisdom. She is the Goddess of the Witches.

Birch Witch Pagan Spring Goddess Who Runs With Fox

Celtic Tree Lore

Fearn – it is the fourth letter in the Celtic Tree Alphabet (Ogham) and means “the alder tree”

Alder Tree - Celtic Moon month - 18th March – 14th April
The first Full Moon after the Vernal (Spring) Equinox is the 4th Moon of the Year, and is called April's Full Moon, Ostara's Moon or the Alder Moon.

Latin name - Alnus Glutinosa

This tree has many associations with the faery realm as it grows near water (where water and land meet) and has red and purple as colour. The colour purple gives it is link to Kings especially the Elf and Faery King. Its elements are fire, earth and water. Whistles made from green Alder wood were used by witches to call forth help from the realm of the other world. The traditional Witch's Broom is made of an ash handle and bristles from birch twigs. Known as sacred trees in Wicca/Witchcraft and the tree of the God’s and Goddesses of fire, forge and smith craft. Alder’s burning qualities have always been prized among metal workers and smiths as it makes excellent charcoal for the forge and potter’s oven.
Brigit, flaming red-haired (flame-colored foxes are profoundly related to fire-witches, i.e. Circe, the powerful Sorceress and Enchantress with flaming red hair, sometimes been referred to as both a Goddess and a Sorceress _as it is the case with Ceridwen, and Freya, the Goddess of the Witches) Celtic goddess of fire: As a goddess of smithcraft, she governs the forge's fire; the fire of the forge is one of transformation, alchemy and healing. As a patroness of hearth and home, she governs the household fires; she is sometimes depicted with a cauldron, symbolizing inspiration and knowledge. Also she is the patroness of poetry and inspiration, creativity and healing. Variant forms of her name include Brid, Bride, Brighid, Brigit. Brigit was born at sunrise, just before dawn. Alder is a tree also sacred to Astarte.
